Tips for Pest-Free Living

If you will be out of town for more than two weeks, or do not use all of the rooms in your home on a regular basis, the following information will be important to you and your home!

    Water Pipes

Water pipes in your home are intended to hold water at all times. This controls (not eliminates) pest entry and noxious fumes from the sewer system. Pipes not frequently used will eventually become dry as the water evaporates. The pipes may then become a superhighway to pests including cockroaches (palmettos) and rodents. To prevent this from happening while you are on vacation, it is important to properly prepare your home and have a trusted friend, relative or neighbor check on your home on a regular basis. If you are not leaving town, but have a room that is not used on a regular basis, simply flush the toilet and run water in the sink and shower/tub for 1-2 minutes every two weeks.

    Kitchen

Run water down the drain. Thoroughly dry the sink and surrounding area. Cover drains and overflow to prevent evaporation. Dispose of, or refrigerate, all open food products. Products purchased in paper, plastic, cellophane, or cardboard containers should be sealed in glass containers with a screw type lid. Thoroughly wash and dry counter tops, cabinet fronts and flooring.

    Bathrooms

Lift the lid and seat of your commode. Wrap the opening in the toilet bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Be sure to put the seat and lid down. Place a heavy object (such as a gallon jug of water) on top of the lid.

    When You Return

Follow the same procedure as recommended for sealing the kitchen drain. Be sure to cover the drain and overflow in the sink and bathtub as well as the shower drain.

It is possible that you will find dead insects in your home upon return. This is a sign that our service is working and is not a cause for alarm. It is a good idea, however, to have the person checking on your home clean up the dead insects because they can attract ants from the outside.
